Threats

The mink is an American animal which has been introduced to Britain. It is a threat to water voles and other native species. There is a mink raft on Dùn Coillich which is there to check for the tracks of mink in clay. The survey is organised by the Scottish Mink Initiative. See www.scottishmink.org.uk for details.

Grey Squirrels are larger than Red Squirrels and are better at digesting acorns. They carry a virus called squirrel pox which does not kill them but does kill Red Squirrels. Red Squirrels do better in coniferous plantations and when the woodland at Dùn Coillich has developed red squirrels will benefit.
